The Magic Carpet is a valuable tool for the art of leak detection. Portable, robust and easy to use, it has proved to be effective and reliable in use with several UK water companies. It is exceptionally accurate and has a quick response time. The unit is also impervious to intermittent background noise and allows for single person operation. The Carpet is 1.5 metres long and has an array of sensors which use surface noise correlation to display any leak noise profile on a LCD screen. This enables a high degree of accuracy in pin pointing the leak position. Headphones can be used to sample the channels sequentially in stereo, acting as a row of eight simultaneous listening sticks. Major reductions in the cost of leakage detection and repair can result from the use of the Carpet, with beneficial impact on Asset Management Plans.
